History of Chenango and Madison County re: McDonough
PHYSICIANS.---The first physician at McDonough was probably Russel W.Morley, who was licensed in New Hampshire and came from Athol, Mass.,about 1818. He located on two acres, a mile east of McDonough village, which are now owned by Ross Blivin. He afterwards removed to the villageand built the house where Mason Whipple now lives. He practiced here moreor less till his death, April 29, 1859, aged 74, or until incapacitatedby age. Silas G. Chappelle was practicing here as early as 1827, Oct. 9thof which year he joined the County Medical Society. He practiced a fewyears and removed to Penfield, Monroe county. Elam Bartlett andWilliam D. Purple , the latter now of Greene, practiced here ashort time between 1830 and 1840. Milton Mason, of Preston, commencedpractice here about 1840 and continued till his death, Oct. 20, 1843.
From same book--- but concerning Greene, NY:
The present physicians are: William D. Purple, Marcus M. Wood, Ralph B.Crandall, Leonard M. Johnson, Charles G. Roberts, and Geo. O. Williams.
William D. Purple, M. D., was born in Burlington, Otsego county,April 6, 1802. His father was Edward Purple, an early settler in the townof Smithville. Dr. Purple commenced the study of medicine with Dr.Charles Josslyn of Greene, in 1820, and remained with him four years. Heafterwards continued his studies with Arthur Packer and Austin Rouse ofOxford. He was licensed to practice in 1824, and entered upon the dutiesof his profession in Bainbridge, where he remained six years, when heremoved to Greene. He practiced here till 1853, when he abandoned themedical profession and engaged in mercantile business, which he stillcontinues. Dr. Purple possesses a remarkably retentive memory, and hismind is a rich store-house of facts and incidents connected with theearly settlements in this locality, with which he is probably moreconversant than any other individual in the southern part of the county. His efforts to rescue from oblivion the intensely interesting facts whichenter into the early chapters of the county's history, and which arerapidly passing out of the reach of the present generation, are worthy ofthe highest commendation and of more general emulation. He has been aliberal contributor to the periodical medical literature of the country, and in 1849, on the recommendation of the State Medical Society, receivedfrom the Regents of the University of this State, the Honorary Degree ofM. D.
